TiO2 (titanium dioxide) is an oxide of the metal titanium which occurs naturally as a rutile in some acid igneous rocks and metamorphic rocks, and is also in sedimentary rocks and beach sands. TiO2 (titanium dioxide) is found in heavy mineral sand deposits rutile and is often associated with a common titanium mineral, ilmenite, together with zircon, monazite and magnetite.
You will find TiO2in all kinds of paint, printing ink, plastics, paper, synthetic fibers, rubber, condensers, painting colors and crayons, ceramics, electronic components along with food and cosmetics.
Titanium dioxide has many uses, including the following:
Pigment - Titanium dioxide is the most widely used white pigment because of its brightness and very high refractive index (n = 2.7), in which it is surpassed only by a few other materials. When deposited as a thin film, its refractive index and color make it an excellent reflective optical coating for dielectric mirrors and some gemstones like "mystic fire topaz". In powder form it is employed as a pigment to provide whiteness and opacity to products such as paints, coatings, plastics, papers, inks, foods, medicines (i.e. pills and tablets) as well as most toothpastes.
Titanium dioxide is often used to whiten skimmed milk; this has been shown statistically to increase skimmed milk's palatability.
Titanium dioxide is used to mark the white lines on the tennis courts of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
Sunscreen and UV Absorber - In cosmetic and skin care products, titanium dioxide is used as a pigment, sunscreen and a thickener. It is also used as a tattoo pigment and in styptic pencils
Titanium Dioxide Photocatalyst - Many studies have been published on the use of TiO2 as a photocatalyst for the decomposition of organic compounds. TiO2 is active under UV light
Photocatalytic activity (PCA) is the ability of a material to create an electron hole pair as a result of exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The resulting free-radicals are very efficient oxidizers of organic matter. Photocatalytic activity in TiO2 has been extensively studied because of its potential use in sterilization, sanitation, and remediation applications. The ability to control PCA is important in many other applications utilizing TiO2 including paint pigments and cosmetics that require low PCA.
Titanium Dioxide Antimicrobial Coatings
The photocatalytic activity of titanium results in thin coatings of the material exhibiting self cleaning and disinfecting properties under exposure to UV radiation. These properties make the material a candidate for applications such as medical devices, food preparation surfaces, air conditioning filters, and sanitaryware surfaces.
